Any community organization looking to serve the needs of its population will do well to survey those residents.
That’s exactly what castle medical center does on a regular basis.
Castle Medical Center staff and doctors wanted to know where the emphasis should be when it comes to community health care needs so they took a survey.
"Top needs of respondents and their family members in 2011 were hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, and heart disease, joint problems, elderly care and obesity,” said Dr. Joanne Reid.
A survey like this helps the community because lots of information can be accumulated when a doctor or doctors work together with a hospital.
"It’s very difficult for a physician working one on one with a patient in their office trying to get an outcomes based diabetic education, for example. And this is where a hospital is a perfect partner with them. Diabetes is one, obesity another great example. We do a lot of work with them to make sure that teaching can occur,” said Dr. Reid.
Castle will be conducting a series of seminars addressing the community’s health concerns and the emphasis will be on prevention.
"When we talk about chronic disease prevention, we’re really talking about life style changes and really simple things such as improving what we eat, eating more fruits and vegetables…and whole grains and we’re talking about being more physically active and dealing more effectively with stress,” said Beth Davidann.
The first seminar will be held April 12th at Castle Medical Center‘s wellness center and we like the name of the seminars.
"This is a first in a series that we’re calling in sickness and in health seminars for our community that’s matching the health needs of the community that were identified with our survey and partnering with our physicians,” said Davidann.
To register for the seminar call #263-5400 or go to castlemed.org.
