Column: He pilikia ‘ūlina ko kākou

Synopsis: Between the state of California and Hawaiæi lies the great Pacific garbage patch. It is 1.6 million square kilometers in area, which is twice the state of Texas and three times the size of France. Approximately 80% of this garbage is plastic from single-use items, such as water bottles and bags. These plastics degrade into microplastics, which enter the food chain and the human body, causing many health problems. We all need to be aware and help reduce plastics in the ocean.
