He brought a gun to a fist fight and now he’s going to prison for at least ten years.
Christopher Alesna shot and killed Kai Phanthanouvong during a fight at Ala Moana Park in September of 2008.
The victim’s family got to speak to the killer during his sentencing.
The family of Kai Phanthanouvong has been waiting more than three years for this day.
"He did not only kill my brother. He killed me, he killed my mom, he killed my sisters. He killed my whole entire family, that’s what he did,” said Jade Powers, victim’s sister.
When Phanthanouvong was killed he left behind his mom and five sisters.
"Don’t act like this is hard to hear us talk to you. You know what is hard? Going to my brother’s funeral,” said Chantah Phanthanouvong, victim’s sister.
Christopher Alesna says he received threatening message from Phanthanouvong and that the two agreed to meet at Ala Moana park to fight.
It was a fist fight that ended in a shooting.
"My deepest apologies, I am very sorry for what happened that night. And I didn’t wish that happened to anyone,” said Alesna.
Alesna was sentenced to twenty years in prison for manslaughter.
Ten years will be mandatory because of the use of a firearm.
"So is it okay to do twenty years for killing somebody? That’s the question I have to live with for the rest of my life,” said Powers.
While Alesna gets a prison term, the victim’s family is left to try and pick up the pieces.
"Every year in October we have to deal with it. He would have been a year older. You’re just heartless,” said Phanthanouvong.
"And I had to identify his body. That image live with me every single night. Every morning I wake up three thinking that phone is ringing, to go to the hospital,” said Powers.
