76 Premium Profile: Matt Meola and Albee Layer

$100,000. That’s the top prize offered in Taylor Steele’s "Innersection Free Surf Contest," an internet-based surf video competition.

Last year, in its inaugural campaign, the 100 grand was awarded to Maui’s Matt Meola.

This year, it was Matt’s best friend, Albee Layer, who claimed the cash.

They’re obviously doing something right on the Valley Isle, and we take a closer look in this edition of the 76 Premium Profile.

Two surfing soulmates, Matt Meola, 22, and Albee Layer, 20. Both live in Haiku. And both shred.

The contest finalists are featured in the annual Innersection movie, and Albee says it was seeing Matt garnering the previous year’s acclaim that sparked his effort this time around.

With the help of a family friend, Elliot Leboe, he did it.

Leboe actually edited and produced both winning segments.

Layer says the achievement is a testament to the Maui surf scene

These two friends displayed their talents via a unique approach to pro surfing: the two have strayed from following tours, deciding instead to go "viral," sharing their free surfing sessions and everyday experiences through webisodes at Meolalayerproductions.com.

As for the $100,000, Meola says it’s going towards owning his own house in Haiku.

Layer says he plans on going on a surf trip with his buddy.

Free surfers indeed.
