Cleanup underway for arsenic-poisoned soil on Kauai

A final report reveals more about soil contamination near old sugar mill land in Kilauea, Kauai.

Soil samples taken last August were reviewed by the Health Department.

They found levels of arsenic and dioxins on three properties, which were once used as pesticide mixing sites for the sugar mill.

Two residential lots and one commercial lot have been covered or fenced to protect the public.

We’re in the process now, working very closely with the County Government and the Federal Government to clean up the toxins in the soil, replace clean soil on site, and cap and protect any other contamination from ever reaching the public," said Gary Gill, from the State Department of Health.

The State is asking for assistance from the Federal Government to help cover the million dollar cost of the cleanup.

Meetings later this month will offer the community more details on what comes next.
