Column: Challenger’s legacy, lessons 40 years on

As we approach the 40th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster on Jan. 28, 2026, I find myself reflecting not only on that tragic day but also on its profound impact on my journey as an educator these last four decades. The disaster claimed the lives of seven NASA astronauts, including Kona’s own Col. Ellison Onizuka. For many in the West Hawaii community, this day remains a somber reminder of loss, but it also represents resilience and growth. For those who experienced it, Jan. 28, 1986, is a day etched in memory, as most families, neighbors and community members witnessed the accident live on TV, or gathered around screens at their local KTA store.
