Intelligence combined with compassion can ensure a better future for everyone. That was one of the messages from the Dalai Lama, who spoke to students at Kailua High School Monday.
His laughter has endeared him to audiences all around the world. But it’s the Dalai Lama’s wealth of knowledge that draws the crowds. For the students at Kailua High School, just his presence alone was a life changing experience.
"When he came to me, I didn’t know what to do, but I know I just had to put my hand out for him to grab me and like, bow, and it was just awesome," said student Norma Joy Agbisit.
His Holiness, now nearly 77 years old, spoke about how much he enjoys talking to younger people because they have the potential to make a better world. And he has his personal reasons.
"When I mix with young people then mentally I also feel a little bit younger," the Dalai Lama said.
More importantly, he told them how important it is to use their intelligence with plenty of compassion, because many of the world’s problems can be solved by using a strong combination of both.
"So happy future, happy world can be achieved only through combination of wisdom and warm-heartedness," he said.
With the future on their shoulders, His Holiness also told them that they need to absorb knowledge by constantly analyzing it, contemplating it, and familiarizing themselves with it so it comes out naturally. These are words that inspired some students to want to accomplish big things.
"You don’t have to be big to do something about it. You can just start by little acts, random acts of kindness – it doesn’t matter who you are, you can spread peace and compassion," said student Victoria Gentry.
