Off the news: Kolekole Pass to open for emergencies

Spurred by a spike in state emergency planning after the 2023 Lahaina fire disaster — and an act of Congress — the Army and Navy have committed to enable emergency evacuations on Lualualei Naval Road through Kolekole Pass. Lack of coordination kept gates locked over the past 15 years or so, as the road deteriorated, but after the Maui fire, federal law was enacted requiring the branches to work together on maintenance and emergency access.
