Editorial: Noise cameras are sound idea

It’s next steps for a traffic noise detection program that got underway in 2023 and has yet to bear fruit. Building on a 2023 pilot program, House Bill 1588 stands up a full-fledged noise monitoring and enforcement program lawmakers hope will cut down on high-decibel vehicles, be it rumbling trucks that wake residents at odd hours, or hot rods racing down the boulevard. This is largely a quality of life issue that for many represents a serious and long-unsolved urban blight. And with $2.5 million previously budgeted to the pilot data collection initiative, the impetus to follow through and make the system official — enforcement and all — is correct.
