Editorial: Seriously review furlough program

Predicting human behavior, even under ideal circumstances, is a tricky thing. Add in elements of an aberrant, even violent, past, and the uncertainty grows exponentially. So, when dealing with community safety, the vetting of danger risks must hit red-flag levels when evaluating a felon who’s been convicted of attempted manslaughter and second-degree assault, plus two counts of third-degree sex assault a decade prior. Outrage and doubts now swirl — rightly so — over whether the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) heeded such flashing-red alerts after two women were stabbed last week within hours, one to death and one critically.
