Off the news: WestPac votes to fish marine monuments

Over the objections of Hawaii ocean scientists and cultural practitioners, the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WesPac) voted on March 25 to allow longline fishing within extended boundaries of the Pacific Islands Heritage and Papahanaumokuakea marine national monuments. Additional commercial fishing was approved within Mariana Trench and portions of the Rose Atoll and Papahanaumokuakea monuments.
