Exposed pipe in Ala Wai could take weeks to go down

The city says it could take up to three weeks to re-submerge a portion of a back-up sewage pipe in the Ala Wai Canal.

About 100 feet of the 5,000 long pipe is exposed.

City crews plan on drilling a hole into the pipe to release the gas that caused the pipe to float to the surface.

Officials say a small amount of sewage is in the pipe, but do not expect it to leak into the ocean.

“Then we’ll gradually release the gas through a series of odor mitigating canisters and then most likely have the air being emitted to another manhole on the other side of the street,” said Tim Steinberger of the Environmental Services Department.

City officials could not say how much the repair will cost, but say they have an emergency contingency fund to take care of repairs like these.
