Friends identify driver killed in fatal crash in windward Oahu

Honolulu police say the driver had been speeding and was drunk when he crashed into a tree last night in windward Oahu.

The driver and passenger were killed instantly.

Look closely and you can see the back end of the Honda Civic.

"Combination of speed and a wet road and a slight curve in the road," said Lt. David Nilsen of the Honolulu Police Department.

Investigators also believe the driver had been drunk, and wasn’t wearing his seatbelt.

The passenger, however, was wearing her seatbelt.

Police spent hours investigating this crash on Kamehameha Highway near Johnson Road.

That’s about halfway between Waikane and Kualoa.

"It just involved one vehicle. The driver lost control and went off the side of the road into a tree," Nilsen said.

Police say the car had been heading Kaneohe Bound around 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

A day later, flare remnants mark the spot where the crash happened along with flowers.

Friends of the driver gathered Sunday afternoon to pray, and remember better times.

"Growing up he was a star athlete, he was good at track," said friend Kawika Sebay.

They say the driver was Micah Mench, a 27-year old from Kahaluu.

He graduated from Castle High School.

"He knew how to make people laugh, he knew how to have a good time, and he was a joker," Sebay said.

But apparently, according to court records, he had also gotten a couple of traffic tickets.

In 2009, Mench got a ticket for going either more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit or faster than 80 miles per hour.

He pled no contest.

And back in 2004, he was found guilty of drunk driving, while under the age of 21.

Mench’s friends didn’t know where he was going to or coming from Saturday night, but they do know they’re going to miss him.

"I pray for his family them he’s a good guy," Sebay said.

When asked about the woman who was in the car with Mench Saturday night, his friends didn’t want to comment, other than that she was a friend of his.

Police say she was 22-years old.

The City Medical Examiner isn’t releasing her name yet either.
