Flood advisory issued for the Big Island

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 3:45 p.m.

Radar showed heavy rain near Waikii and near the Waikoloa junction, with these rains moving slowly westward.

Additional areas of heavy rain may develop along the south Kohala and north Kona slopes through the afternoon.

The NWS asks residents to take these precautionary actions:

-Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.

-Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

-Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 3:45 p.m. if heavy rain persists.
