This year’s "Click it or Ticket" campaign will have an added emphasis on night-time enforcement.
The national "Click it or Ticket" campaign started yesterday and runs until June 5th. Police officers will be stopping anyone not wearing a seat belt..and giving them a $92 ticket. During last year’s campaign more than 1,500 citations were issued.
It is public education to understand the value of seat belts," said Major Kurt Kendro of the Honolulu Police Department. "And sometimes education requires you recievng a citation because i am probably sure that most people that recieved a citation will always wear that seat belt in the future and tell their friends about it."
Hawaii has a 96% seat belt usage rate which is one of the highest in the nation.
Last year there were 20 fatalities that happened on the roads state wide at night and 9 of those fatalities were not wearing their seat belts.
So this year police will be stepping up their enforcement at night.
"So we know at night people seem to think that they can not wear their seat belt be we are here to remind you that we will be enforcing the seat belt laws daytime and night time."
