New weapon in fight against cancer developed in Hawaii

A new weapon in the fight against cancer was developed right here in Hawaii.

A team of scientists lead by doctor James Turkson created the new drug. It’s different from other drugs because it is effective when taken orally even at home. Most cancer treatments require intravenous administration at a clinic or hospital.

"We have done over the last couple of years is come up with a molecule that is able to sandwich this particular molecule called Stat3 and when it sandwiches between it it is able to pull the Stat3 protein apart," noted James Turkson, PhD of the University of Hawaii.

The Stat-3 protein causes cancer by promoting abnormal cell growth in otherwise healthy cells. The findings are published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."
