PHOENIX (AP) – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has sent one of his deputies to Hawaii to accompany an official in his volunteer posse investigating President Barack Obama’s birth certificate.
The sheriff said earlier that no taxpayer money was being spent in the probe.
Arpaio says Tuesday that taxpayers won’t ultimately foot the bill because the posse will reimburse his office for the deputy’s trip to Hawaii this week.
He says the posse has so far used $40,000 in donations to pay for the probe.
The Arizona Republic first reported that Arpaio had sent the deputy to Hawaii.
The sheriff launched the investigation last summer and released preliminary findings in March.
