The city planning commission decided to delay a decision regarding the closure of the Waimanalo Gulch landfill for six-months.
A ruling by the Hawaii Supreme court last month allowed the landfill to stay open past a previously set closure date of July 31st.
The city also agreed to hand over more than 200 documents related to the landfill’s closure to the state.
"The important things planning commission decided and agreed with the land use commission and the hawaii supreme court that the land use commission should have the benefit of the entire record," said Calvert Chipchase of Cades Schutte. "And the planning commission agreed that it is important for the land use commission to consider that evidence when it makes it decision."
The selection process is underway for a new landfill location, but the process is expected to take more than seven years.
