PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – A 32-year-old Sailor from USS Russell was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
The crew of the Hawaii-based Russell responded to a man overboard at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday while conducting operations approximately 50 miles off the coast of the island of Oahu.
The Sailor, who was unconscious and not breathing, was recovered from the water approximately 15 minutes later and CPR was immediately administered.
The Sailor has been identified as Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Petty Officer Troy Hunter. His home of record is Penbroke Pines, FL. CS2 Hunter enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 30, 2008 and was assigned to USS Russell in January 2009.
A formal investigation is being conducted.
