Hundreds of thousands of internet users could lose service in less than two weeks if they don’t take action.
The move was prompted by the FBI in an effort to disinfect computers hit by a sophisticated virus.
Last November, the FBI arrested and charged 6 Estonian Nationals with running a sophisticated Internet fraud ring that infected millions of computers worldwide.
“Most of the time people are not aware that they have this virus a lot of times anti-virus won’t pick this one up,” said Timothy Caminos of the Hawaii Better Business Bureau. “There is a virus or a malware and this is called a DNS changer virus and what that does is it redirects people web service to malicious websites,” said Caminos.
DNS which stands for domain name system is what helps us connect to websites.
“What the FBI is doing is that they’re offering a way to help consumers or businesses or whoever make sure that they’re DNS is safe, secure and not hacked,” said Caminos.
Caminos says the process to check if your computer has a virus is simple and takes less than 5 minutes to do.
Though, if you don’t do it by July 1, and your computer is infected, you could lose internet service.
“This is the first time that we know of that they’re doing something like this these types of attacks have been happening over few years to where hackers are taking over people’s computers,” said Caminos.
