Marine Corps Base Hawaii hosts canoe regatta again after 20 years

The Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe held an event today that hasn’t been done in 20 years.

They held an outrigger canoe regatta on base.

Several canoe clubs including the Marine Corps Base’s team Na Koa Lani participated in the race.

The last time a race was held on base was in 1992.

Before today’s event the regatta was held at Keehi lagoon.

But the Marine Corps worked with the Oahu Hawaii Canoe Racing Association for the last two years to move the race back on base.

Officials say that’s because the waters near the base are clean and deep which can help make races very competitive.
