A Kalihi man accused of killing his adoptive mother has been found mentally fit to proceed with the trial.
Charlie Hernane, 28, was back in Honolulu Circuit Court Monday.
He’s accused of killing 56-year-old Teresita Hernane at their home on Eluwene Street in May of 2011.
The woman’s body was found in her bed with deep cuts to her head.
Prosecutors say Charlie has a history of mental illness.
But a panel of doctors has recommended that he is fit to stand trial.
"He understands the charges against him and he’s able to assist in his defense so we’ll be proceeding at trial at this point, the case has been assigned before Judge Pollack in September,” said Darrell Wong, deputy prosecutor.
Charlie Hernane was adopted by Teresita when he was a child living in the Philippines.
