XMap scavenger hunt game pays off for Hawaii residents

Do you want to go on a treasure hunt to win some money?
There’s an app for that!
It’s called X-Map and the game is taking off among those looking for adventure and fast cash.

It’s easy to spot the players, known as X-Mappers. They’re always checking their phones. X-Map is an app you download on your mobile phone for free. It gives you two clues for free, and then you have the option of buying two more for 99-cents each, to find a marked plastic card that can be redeemed for cash. Neal Magnisi won $1,000 this morning.

Neal Mmagnisi an X-Map winner said, "Had the flashlight I was trying to make sure nobody saw me searching through the banyan tree cause I didn’t know where it would be and then there’s a little golden sign on the side of the tree and it was right behind that."

The dollar amount varies, depending on the difficulty of the clues. Meagan Fujimoto won $2,000, but it took persistence.

Megan Fujimoto another X-Map winner said, "Showing up here at the park everyday after work for like three, four hours searching. It took us a week."

The game is being played in several cities on the mainland. Valerie Holt Parker brought the game here three months ago and she says thousands of people have been playing, which surprised her mainland partners.

Valerie Holt Parker the Co-Founder of X-Map says, "They said this population is too small, the people can’t carry it here, but I said trust me, Hawaii people they take care of their own, and they have, they’ve embraced this game so much they’ve sent it viral."

X Mappers say the thrill is not just about the money.

Llance Agena former X-Map winner says, "A lot of the hunt with X-Map, the fun is looking through the clues and figuring it out and beating other guys to it."

A new game is played every Saturday and another one during the week.
