Water Conservation Poetry and Poster Winners Announced

HONOLULU – Winners of the Board of Water Supply’s (BWS) 2011 Water Conservation Week Poster and Poetry Contests were announced today at an awards ceremony at the City and County of Honolulu’s Mission Memorial Auditorium.

“The children and teachers who participate in this program serve as a great example to all residents of the City and County of Honolulu,” said Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle.  “By using their creative talents to promote sustainable practices in the community, they are helping to set the groundwork for future generations.”

The winning students were each recognized and presented with awards for their creative expressions of this year’s contest theme, “Me He Ahupua‘a – Mai Uka I Kai, E Malama Wai (As an Ahupua‘a – from Mountain to Sea, Conserve Water).”  The contest winners also received U.S. savings bonds and other prizes.

“These contests are our way of encouraging the leaders of tomorrow to take an active role in ensuring the sustainability of Oahu’s groundwater supply,” said BWS Chairman of the Board Randy Chung.

“The quality and creativity of the students’ artwork and poetry always amazes me,” said BWS Acting Manager Dean Nakano.  “Not only do the students demonstrate that they clearly understand the importance of water conservation, but their work helps us to convey this message year-round.”

Top honors were awarded to 24 Oahu students in different categories from Kindergarten to 12th grade, along with 18 honorable mentions.  The poster contest was open to students in grades K through 6 and the poetry contest was open to grades 7 to 12.  The winning entries were chosen by contest judges out of more than 1,400 posters and nearly 175 poems received in the 33rd annual poster and 3rd annual poetry contests.  The winning and honorable mention artwork and poems will be featured in the BWS 2012 Water Conservation calendar, which will be printed and made available to the public at the end of this year. It will also be on the BWS website at www.boardofwatersupply.com to download for free.  All winning and honorable mention entries will also be on exhibit at:
