HONOLULU (AP) – A complaint has been filed in federal court seeking an injunction to halt Oahu’s rail transit project.
A group of the project’s opponents filed the complaint Thursday naming federal and Honolulu transit officials as defendants.
The group includes former Hawaii Gov. Benjamin Cayetano, a former trustee of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the leader of a nonprofit transportation watchdog corporation.
The complaint says the project is expensive and will negatively impact historic and cultural resources without significantly improving traffic.
According to the complaint the 20-mile project from East Kapolei to Ala Moana will disrupt Native Hawaiian burial sites.
The plaintiffs and their attorney are to discuss details of the complaint at a Thursday news conference.
