Kaneohe Marine Corps Base will house the Marine Corps’ latest transport aircraft.
It’s called the MV-22 Osprey.
The Marines say it has the speed of a turboprop, the ability to move and tilt like a helicopter, and it can transport troops farther and faster.
The decision to base them in Hawaii comes after the completion of an environmental impact statement.
“For the most part all flight paths are over water and what you’ll find in the EIS it does address flight tracks here and at Kalaupapa and most training will take aircraft over water,” said Capt. Derek George of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Kaneohe Marine Corps Base will have a total of 24 Osprey aircrafts, and one light attack helicopter squadron.
