Police officer hospitalized after being struck by car

A Honolulu Police officer was taken to the hospital Sunday morning after being hit by a car.

It happened on the Fort Weaver on ramp to the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction just before 7:30 a.m.

According to police, the officer was a responding in a single-car accident on the on ramp at the time.  Police say he was outside of his vehicle when a BMW came around the corner of the on ramp, spun out and slid into the officer, pinning his leg against his patrol vehicle.

Police say they believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. They also say the road was wet, which may have contributed to the crash.

EMS officials say the 29-year-old officer was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.

The driver of the BMW was not arrested.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
