August is breastfeeding awareness month

Governor Abercrombie has proclaimed August as breastfeeding awareness month.

A ceremony was held this morning at the governor’s office.

The governor says the purpose of the proclamation is to support programs that encourage breastfeeding, which he says is not just a woman’s issue.

It is not isolated it is seen in conjunction with prenatal care on up to 8 years old so children are fully and totally prepared to become healthy adults," said Governor Neil Abercrombie.

The U.S. Surgeon General recommends feeding a baby only breast milk until six months of age.

According to a report released this year by the CDC only 16% of babies nationwide were exclusively breastfed at six months old.

That number was higher here in Hawaii, at nearly 21%.
