Big Island candidate files election complaint

A state house candidate from the Big Island has filed a complaint with the Hawaii Supreme Court over primary election day problems on the Big Island.

Kalei Akaka was running for the democratic nomination for District 6 which covers the Kailua-Kona area. She lost by 45 votes to Nicole Lowen.

The Big Island county clerk has been under fire for problems that caused several polling places to open late on primary election day.

In a statement released by Akaka’s attorney this evening she says:
“I am bringing this lawsuit because I feel that due to the numerous voting procedure irregularities which have been extensively covered by the media, Hawaii Island citizens were not provided with a proper and fair electoral process.”

Akaka’s lawsuit seeks a recount of the ballots cast or a re-run of the primary election for her district.
