Australian tourist Tyson Dagley pleaded no contest Thursday in court to negligent homicide for the death of Kristen Fonseca.
The two were riding jet skis earlier this month off Keehi Boat Harbor, when Dagley slammed into Fonseca, killing the 16-year-old girl.
Prosecutors said Dagley was operating his jet ski recklessly, at speeds of between 40 and 45 miles per hour at the time, and was not looking in front of him.
Dagley had previously offered a tearful apology for his actions. Negligent homicide in the third degree carries a maximum penalty of a year in prison and a $2,000 fine. Fonseca’s family had asked for a stiffer penalty.
Earlier this week Dagley was released from prison after posting $100,000 bail. His attorney is asking for a deferred acceptance plea, which would mean his record would be wiped clean if he stays out of trouble for a specific amount of time. Sentencing is scheduled for September 5th.
Dagley’s girlfriend Natasha Ryan was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution. Police were able to recover video of the crash they say she had erased on her camera. Ryan is expected in court next month.
