UH punter fined, license revoked after pleading no contest to drunk driving

Alex Dunnachie, the University of Hawaii punter who was arrested in July for drunk driving, was sentenced Friday.

He pled no contest in early August and as part of that plea agreement a judge ordered the 21-year-old senior to pay a $200 fine and suspended his license for a year. But, because Dunnachie installed an ignition interlock system into his car, he will still be able to drive with use of an interlock ignition permit.

He will also have to complete an alcohol assessment and 14 hours of driver’s education classes.

What is still unknown is Dunnachie’s role on the UH football team.

"I know as much as you do, Coach Chow said ‘indefinitely suspended’ at the moment," Dunnachie says.

The punter did get to practice with the Warriors during the team’s fall camp.

"To get back there with them and help the team for this season, it was a big deal to me and it felt real good," Dunnachie says. "The team is my family out here. So I’ve got 120 brothers and when the incident happened I feel I let them down."
