John Carroll, who lost to Linda Lingle in the republican primary race for U.S. Senate, is endorsing Mazie Hirono, Lingle’s democratic opponent in the upcoming general election.
Hirono and Carroll stood side by side at a news conference Friday morning.
Carroll says based on Lingle’s record as former governor and republican party chairwoman, he decided to support Hirono.
"I believe that Lingle is a clear and present danger to the economic and political health of the state of hawaii," said John Carroll.
He continued and said, "she left the state in economic shambles and now she’s saying this is all myth."
A campaign spokesman for Lingle said in a statement, "Carroll has not been a serious candidate and this is not a serious endorsement."
Carroll received fewer than 3,000 votes in the primary election.
The chairman of the Hawaii Republican Party says Carroll could face sanctions, including removal from the republican party.
