There’s a new tool to help save lives in waters off Windward Oahu.
Lifeguards now have a jet ski stationed at Kailua Beach for ocean rescues.
It also makes it easier to patrol the waters.
With the jet ski, response times for rescues from Mokapu to Makapuu have been reduced to four to six minutes.
"And that’s really the amount of time that someone has if they go under water before there’s going to be very serious consequences," said Ocean Safety Chief Jim Howe.
Jet ski operators will also wear new red jerseys as opposed to the yellow shirts that lifeguards wear on shore to differentiate between the two units.
