14 years after the death of beloved island musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, his legacy lives on through his music.
Last night his song "Over the Rainbow" won an Echo Award — that’s Germany’s version of the Grammys.
This is a huge deal. Iz beat out international stars like Shakira, and German pop star Lena to win the "Hit of the Year" award.
Music has the power to enchant.
And Israel Kamakawiwo’ole continues to move people around the world with his soothing voice.
"Over the Rainbow" was released in Germany last year after Mountain Apple Company Hawaii and Big Boy Records licensed it to B1 Recordings/Universal Music in Europe.
"And it’s a hit record everywhere. It’s number one in France, number one in Portugal this week. It’s double platinum in Germany," said Mountain Apple President Leah Bernstein.
And "Over the Rainbow" just won top honors in Germany’s version of the Grammy Awards.
Mountain Apple CEO Jon de Mello accepted the "Hits des Jahres" — or "Hit of the Year" award.
"Wow! Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, ‘Iz,’ would not have believed this!" said de Mello.
Iz’s widow and daughter thanked the people of Germany through a taped message.
"Mahalo nui loa!"
Also representing Hawaii at the Echo Awards — Grammy Award winner Bruno Mars.
Bruno was nominated for the "Most Successful Newcomer of the Year International" award, but didn’t end up winning.
As for Iz, he continues to live on through his music.
"Iz this for you!"
Bernstein says Iz’s music and popularity is also helping to promote Hawaiian music in general to a European audience.
