HECO: Solar systems installed without study ok

Good news for residents and small business owners who want to save money on their electric bills.

Beginning October 1, HECO says residential and small businesses can receive approval to install a photovoltaic system without the need of an interconnection study.

Before customers living in neighborhoods that generated 15% of peak demand electricity, had to pay thousands of dollars for the study.

"We’re just taking a big obstacle out of the way so they don’t have to worry about a possible study," said Peter Rosegg, Hawaiian Electric Company. "All they have to do is do the paperwork, submit it get the installation close it out then they can take advantage of net energy metering."

HECO customers statewide are eligible to install a single-phase PV system up to ten kilowatts on single phase transfomers.
