Town hall meeting educates community on animal advocacy

The city prosecutor’s office and animal protection groups are urging the public to report suspected animal abuse.

The first of two town hall meetings was held on Tuesday night to educate residents about the process of reporting animal cruelty, and current laws to prevent abuse.

"What we found is people who are cruel to animals are usually cruel to people and that’s why it goes to the heart of public safety making sure we protect the community," said Keith Kaneshiro, Honolulu Prosecutor.

The Humane Society of the United States ranks Hawaii at the bottom of the nation when it comes to animal cruelty.

Residents who witness animal abuse should call the Hawaiian Humane Society or Honolulu police.
