Governor "not surprised" by HSTA petition

On Monday, the governor spoke briefly in response to a petition filed with the Hawaii Supreme Court by the state teachers union.

The petition filed Friday asked the court to order the State Labor Relations Board to make a decision on a complaint filed last year.

The complaint said the state violated union members rights when it implemented its "last, best and final offer."

HSTA says without a decision, the union is prohibited from exercising it’s right to strike.

Governor Abercrombie says there’s little he can say because the state is still in mediation with the union.

However, Abercrombie says, "with regard to that and the negotiations with HSTA, to this point, I’m not surprised by anything."

Last September, the high court ruled the labor relations board can take its time in making a decision on the complaint.
