UPDATE: Firefighters break down door to battle Waikiki blaze

UPDATE:  Fire investigators say the blaze was caused by a failure or malfunction of a built-in dishwasher.

Total damage was estimated at $100,000.

A high-rise fire had tourists and locals evacuating from several floors of a Waikiki building Thursday afternoon.

Neighbors at the Waikiki Skytower on Cleghorn Street smelled smoke and called 911 around 12:30 p.m.

Firefighters found the blaze in the kitchen of a fifth-floor apartment.

No one was home so they had to break into the unit.

"I started smelling smoke, came outside, looked around, saw the smoke coming out the apartment," said neighbor Alan Soistman. "At first it wasn’t too much but then it started pouring out later on once the fire department got here."

The fire was under control in about 15 minutes.

Some occupants had to stay outside for a couple of hours longer for water and smoke to clear.

The fire department says the unit was not heavily damaged but the residents will not be able to stay there.
