New initiative hopes to curb invasive axis deer, earn hunters money

Maui County has come up with a new strategy in combating the invasive axis deer.

It’s a plan that will hopefully get rid of the deer and earn community members money.

The Maui Axis Deer Harvesting Cooperative will give hunters the option to sell the deer meat to commercial entities after it’s been certified and inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The county says the axis deer cause millions of dollars in damage to crops and property every year.
