Windward bike-sharing program promotes health

The state health department has launched a new pilot project in Kailua that it hopes to someday expand to other parts of the state.

The first bike-sharing venture allows people to rent bicycles at a cost of five dollars for a 24 hour period.

You can get a 30-day membership for $30.

Students and seniors pay $20.

Currently there are two bike stations, including this one at the corner of Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive.

"It’s meant to trigger a different way of thinking for a different way of moving about so we’re not assuming you have to get from place to place by car," Lola Irvin, Healthy Hawaii Initiative.

The bicycles can keep track of how many calories have been burned along with the distance traveled.
