Friends, family gather to remember UH swimmer

Loved ones of Peter Chi gathered at the Stan Sheriff Center to remember the University of Hawaii swimmer, who died suddenly this past weekend.

Sharon Chi says her sibling Peter, was more than just a younger brother.

"He was one of my best friends, if not, the best friend that I had," she says.

She says they were always in contact with each other, and described Peter, as a person who just wanted to make others happy.

"My brother’s really funny, he’s really loving, he’s really caring, he’s always being considerate of what everyone else wants or what they like to do," Sharon says.

Sharon says, her only sibling, loved to be near the water, and had been swimming since he was 10 years old. He walked onto the University of Hawaii’s swim team two years ago.

On Saturday morning, the Waiakea High School graduate was found unresponsive in his dorm room.

"It was really sudden. You never really imagine or expect anything like this to happen," Sharon says.

The Medical Examiner says the official cause of death won’t be available for several weeks, but Peter did have a rare heart disorder called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

"It’s kind of life an arrhythmia that people can have and not know. Some people can live their whole lives having a condition like that and not know," Sharon explains.

She says her brother was treated for the condition, "Who knows if it was that, or something else that unfortunately cut his life short."

Peter would have celebrated his 20th birthday, next week.

"I’m going to miss everything about him, even him like scaring me, taking every opportunity to take advantage of how ticklish I am, or trying to scare me with all these gross things," Sharon says.

Chi will be laid to rest Thursday.
