The neighbor islands are still assessing damage from the tsunami. Other than slight sea level changes recorded in Hanalei, Kauai shortly after 10:30 pm Saturday night, the island received very little impact from tsunami waves generated from the British Columbia earthquake.
The Kaua’i Police Department reported that evacuations of coastal areas were orderly and efficient, and all evacuees were safely out of inundation zones well before the first estimated wave arrival time of 10:28 pm.
Ten public schools on Kaua’i were opened by the Department of Education as temporary holding facilities. About 2,200 residents and visitors took safety in the facilities. Beaches on Kaua’i opened Sunday, but most beachgoers appeared to be heeding a statewide advisory to stay out of the water for 24 hours in case unusual currents occur. So far, no major damage has been reported or observed.
Maui county officials are asking residents to report any damage that they might find as well. Information and/or pictures can be sent via email to Communications Director Rod Antone at rod.antone@co.maui.hi.us.
