The initial proposal called for installing bike lanes on both sides of Waialae, from St. Louis Drive to 11th Avenue removing on street parking on the mauka side and no p.m. peak contra flow.
The new proposal calls for no removal of on-street parking except for five stalls between 5th and sixth avenues a continuous bike lane in the koko head bound direction and a combination of bike lane and sharrows — or shared lane — in the ewa bound direction.
Next step for the city — to begin the "design process."
"There are a lot of things we have to design. It’s not a mere restriping. including restriping we have to change signs, and if you think about it, if the lanes move we also have to adjust the signal head locations, on the signal mast arms," says Wayne Yoshioka, City Department of Transportation Services.
Yoshioka says it will likely take months before the design process is complete and the bike lanes and sharrows are created.
