Halloween Behind the Scenes: Nightmares Live

For one Oahu couple, it’s a labor of love.

But they hope to one day turn their hobby into a full-time business.

Every October, Kevin Okada and Kristine Wada create a haunted attraction, aiming to scare both kids and adults.

Nightmares Live owner, Kevin Okada says he has always loved Halloween, he’s been creating haunted attractions on Oahu for the past nine years.

"What I want to do is bring stuff from the mainland stuff you’ll see like at Universal Knotts Berry farm, six flags that kind of quality down here," Okada says.

Okada says he gets most of his ideas from visiting Halloween shows and conventions on the mainland.

This year’s theme is a vintage circus where something has gone terribly wrong.

And, those who dress up to scare you, are sometimes just as surprised as you are.

"They assume I’m a prop along with everything else especially because of my size and so this guy tried to touch me so he started touching my leg I jumped up and screamed in his face," said Chayne Toyama. "He just screamed his head off he flew back into the wall and just ran out of the room, I was like oh wow okay."

Auditions are held every year to find about 20 people who are paid to be in the attraction.

"Most people just disregard me and think just because I’m so big I have to be a mannequin and then I scare them very bad," says Andy Kauffman, one of the actors that are part of the show.

Characters inside the house and outside do their parts to create all the chills and thrills, and all that work takes plenty of time and effort.

"So we’ll be painting things at home we’ll be cutting things out with like our jigsaws at home," Wada says. "We have an awesome crew and they give up a lot of their nights and weekends to help us build this whole maze."

Both owners say seeing people’s reactions makes it all worth it.

"Watching all the expressions on people’s faces when they walk out yeah its priceless that’s why we do it," Okada says.
