Parents of a Windward Oahu community on high alert after a man tried to kidnap a girl

The incident happened near Lanikai Elementary School and fortunately the girl yelled for help and got away.

Members of this small community off Alala Road in Lanikai are keeping their eyes and ears open after a man tried to kidnap a young girl.

"I was completely surprised kid friendly neighborhood we just let our kids go all over the place here and I couldn’t believe something like that would happen right up the street," said parent Mark Ferri.

"I was angry I was pretty angry that it was such a bold attempt that the man went to get out of his car," parent Angie said.

The incident happened on a Saturday around 6-45 in the evening, when the girl was walking her dog not far from her home.

The mother of the young girl who wanted to remain anonymous told us her daughter was approached by a man in a red Jeep who asked, then demanded for her to get in his car. The young girl yelled for help, went home and did not get in the car.

Sara Quitt who picks her kids up near where the incident happened says she bought her daughters cell phones in case of an emergency.

"You can’t live your life in fear and I don’t want to instill fear in the children you just have to be aware of your surroundings and make good choices," said Sara Quitt.

"So surprising unbelievable that she had the where with all to act exactly appropriately," said Ferri.

In response to the incident, the principal of nearby Lanikai Elementary public charter school informed parents, and discussed "stranger danger" at a morning assembly with students.

Police are investigating and have opened an attempted kidnapping case.

"We keep our kids pretty close to home for the most part but that just reinforces that that the kids past dark aren’t going to school and be by themselves unsupervised unattended," Ferri said.
