There’s been an ongoing problem with the sprinkler system at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.
Marisa Yamane has details on a recent problem that’s surfaced.
Regulars at the park say this latest puddle is the biggest one yet.
Ilse Lum and Marilyn MacDonald are two of the four so-called "Golden Girls" of the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.
"And our word is kind of law over here," joked Ilse Lum.
They come almost every day.
These are Ilse’s dogs — Kodiak and Hoku. And Marilyn’s dog Kula.
"I love it as much as the dogs do," said Marilyn MacDonald.
What they don’t love though are the puddles.
"We sit over here and look over to the right side and there’s a puddle and it’s been there for about a month," said Ilse Lum.
"It’s terrible, terrible and people are worried that’s why I don’t see as many dogs as usually. I think people are just staying home because they don’t want them in the water," said Marilyn MacDonald.
"And we are worried because we see mosquitoes landing and little creepy crawly things in there. Some of the dogs have used it to drink and have gotten very very sick," said Ilse Lum.
They and other dog park users have complained to the City not only about this puddle, but also others in the past.
"But this puddle is the worst and it’s over a month already," said Ilse Lum,
It just so happened while we were there talking with the Golden Girls someone from the City showed up.
"It’s wonderful because we were feeling no one had an interest," said Marilyn MacDonald.
"Right now we do have a leak. It appears the best I can do now is shut off the water till our irrigation people come inside. Hopefully by Monday we’ll get the professionals out here," said Wray Taylor, City Building Maintenance Repair.
Taylor says this has been an ongoing problem at the park, and says it appears sometimes people damage the irrigation heads.
"Because they don’t want certain areas to get irrigated, they put rocks on the sprinklers to hold them down. And we’ve had problems in the past where they’ve played with the valves operated themselves," said Taylor.
The Golden Girls say other than the puddles, this place is perfect.
"We have a beautiful place. Where could you go to a place as nice as this," said Marilyn MacDonald.
Other regulars agree it’s a great park, and they’re also grateful the City is working to fix this latest problem with the sprinklers.
