Trash transformed to art at Waikiki Aquarium

Trash was treasured Saturday night at the Waikiki Aquarium.

Dozens gathered at the aquarium for the Surfrider Foundation’s "Rise Above Plastics" party and art exhibit.

The event featured works of art from around the world, created entirely of plastic marine debris.

Although nice to look at, this art serves as a powerful reminder.

"We’re in the age of plastic and its proliferating world wide and its not well recycled, most of it gets lost to the environment and it ends up lots of it in the ocean," said Capt. Charles Moore of the Surfrider Foundation.

Currently the Hawaii Surfrider Foundation is supporting two bills in the state legislature that aim to reduce plastic bag use in Hawaii.

They say plastic bags are one of the most common plastics found in the ocean.
