Honolulu Mayor: Caldwell leads Cayetano with 53.8% after first printout

In the race for Honolulu mayor, Kirk Caldwell is leading Ben Cayetano with 53.8 percent of the vote after the first results printout.

Cayetano has 44.7 percent of the vote after the first printout.

On Monday, both candidates remained cautiously optimistic heading into the home stretch.

Caldwell spent the day with his team on a trolly ride rallying for votes, while Cayetano joined his supporters in sign waving efforts across the island.

The battle for the Honolulu mayor’s seat is likely the most closely watched race for the state elections.

The second results printout is expected to be released in about an hour.
