Two more shark sightings; one closes Maui beach

According to Department of Land and Natural Resources officials, two more shark sightings have been reported on Maui.

The first sighting happened in Wailea Wednesday morning. Officials say a guest at the Grand Wailea Resort reported seeing a shark off the beach fronting the hotel. Security signs were posted and the beach was closed for about half an hour and was reopened after lifeguards could not find any signs of a shark.

The second sighting took place in waters off of Little Beach in Makena, just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. According to Maui County officials, diver reported that an 8 foot Galapagos shark attacked the string of fish that he had trailing behind him.

The diver released the string and headed for shore. Ocean Safety officers on a jet ski later found the string with some partially eaten fish still attached to it.

Lifeguards closed the beach and surrounding areas. No word yet on when the beach will reopen.
