Hawaii County police are warning the public about a new internet scam involving Craigslist.
Officials say a victim answered a Craigslist message seeking nanny services on the Big Island. The victim communicated with the poster by email and was sent a check by mail.
The victim was then asked to send back some of the money via Western Union to an address in Russia. The victim later discovered the was counterfeit.
Investigators say this is a common scam, in which someone receives a "prize" or check and is asked to wire a lesser amount back.
Police urges the public to always verify that a transaction is legitimate before sending money to someone they do not know.
